AVID in SMMUSD
AVID is a nationally recognized program that helps schools close the achievement gap. At SMMUSD, students may join the AVID program in 7th and 8th grade at John Adams Middle School and continue through 9th-12th grade at Santa Monica High School. In their AVID elective class, they are taught explicit strategies (including Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading) designed to help them be successful in their core classes. Specially trained tutors work with the students two to three times a week, with a ratio of approximately 1 tutor for every 8 students. During tutoring, students are not simply given answers to their academic questions but rather taught metacognitive strategies on how to arrive at solutions. Working in collaborative groups, students connect with and encourage one another to create a community of learners. In grades 11 and 12, students receive focused instruction and assistance on college application essays, the college application process, and financial aid forms. They also utilize tutors to help them with the challenges of Advanced Placement and Honors courses.
To be considered for acceptance into the AVID program, a student should have a mid-range academic performance and average test scores. Additionally, students are expected to have good attendance and positive citizenship. Students who have a desire for academic success and are intrinsically motivated, and may be the first in their family to go to college are strongly encouraged to apply.
The application period occurs during February.
