  • Course Description

    Students pursue a balanced literacy program with an emphasis on writing. Writing activities will be based on literature and non-fiction to provide a highly motivated curriculum. Students will receive instruction in the conventions of standard edited English and research techniques. Students will demonstrate the writing process, applying the process to composing texts in various genres, including narrative/autobiographical, literary analysis, expository, and persuasive.

    9th Grade Reading Expectations:

    • Read widely and deeply for school and for personal growth through a variety of lenses.
          • All 9th grade students will read Romeo and Juliet and House on Mango Street.
          • All students will consistently engage in Free-Choice reading.
    • Read beneath the surface to unpack layers of meaning.
    • Research, evaluate, synthesize to deepen and share knowledge

    9th Grade Writing Expectations:

    • Develop writing strategies for writing effectively for a variety of purposes and audiences. Work completed in class and/or taken through the writing process will include the following:
          • Narrative
          • Rhetorical Analysis 
          • Argument/Persuasion
          • Expository/Informative
    • Articulate and exchange ideas effectively, persuasively, and empathetically.
    • Students will create and maintain a digital writing portfolio to showcase work.
