John Adams Middle School Choirs

  • Boys' Chorus (Meistersingers)

    This course is for beginning to intermediate 6-8th grade male singers. This unique class provides a gender-specific environment where boys can feel comfortable singing in their proper vocal range, whether that is Soprano, Alto, Tenor or Baritone/Bass. Studies have shown that boys in such a choir will be more likely to sing out, sing alone, and continue singing despite their particular vocal changes or difficulties. Also, the boys with unchanged voices will have an opportunity to hear boys whose voices are changed or changing and thus have role models for a successful transition to the changed voice status. Emphasis will be placed on healthy vocal production, basic musicianship skills, music reading and notation, improvisation, teamwork, leadership, and exposure to a wide variety of repertoire. Successful completion of this class is a prerequisite to membership in the Norseman Honor Choir, which is an advanced mixed choir.

    Junior Chorus

    This course is designed for the beginning choral music student. No audition is necessary. Instruction will include an introduction to group and solo singing techniques, interpretation of and exposure to a variety of musical styles and periods. Beginning music fundamentals, including note reading, rhythmic practice, and sight-singing will be practiced on a regular basis. In addition to daily practice, preparation for public performance will be emphasized. Performances may include the following: Holiday Concert(s), Spring Concert, solo auditions, assemblies, and various community performances. All students are encouraged to attain their full potential as soloists and members of the choir.

    Concert Choir

    This course is designed for the more mature vocal student. It is for students who have successfully participated in Junior Chorus for one year or have had other previous choral experience and have achieved a certain level of proficiency. Instruction will include practice group and solo singing techniques, as well as more in-depth interpretation of and exposure to a variety of musical styles and periods. Music fundamentals, including note reading, rhythmic practice, and sight-singing will be reinforced on a regular basis. In addition to daily practice, preparation for public performance will be emphasized. Performances may include the following: Holiday Concert(s), Spring Concert, solo auditions, assemblies, and various community performances. All students are encouraged to attain their full potential as soloists and members of the choir and in their other musical endeavors. An audition is required for admission to this chorus.

    Senior Girls' Chorus

    This is an intermediate-advanced chorus designed for 7th and 8th grade female students who have had at least one year of training in either Junior Chorus or Concert Choir (or the equivalent by audition.) Students must demonstrate proficiency in vocal technique, rhythmic accuracy, sightreading , rehearsal conduct and skills, performance readiness, and appreciation for and love of choral singing. Skills are practiced daily, while preparing for performances. Performances may include the following: Holiday Concert(s), Spring Concert, Festivals, solo auditions, assemblies, and various community performances. All students are encouraged to attain their full potential as soloists and members of the choir and in their other musical endeavors.

    Norseman Honor Choir

    This is an advanced chorus designed for 7th and 8th grade students who have had at least one year of training in either Junior Chorus or Concert Choir (or the equivalent by audition.) Students nust have attained advanced proficiency in vocal technique, rhythmic accuracy, sightreading , rehearsal conduct and skills, performance readiness, and appreciation for and love of choral singing. Skills are practiced daily, while preparing for performances. Performances may include the following: Holiday Concert(s), Spring Concert, Festivals, solo auditions, assemblies, and various community performances. All students are encouraged to attain their full potential as soloists and members of the choir and in their other musical endeavors.

    Madrigal Singers

    This is an extra-curricular advanced ensemble selected by audition at the beginning of each school year. Students are encouraged to audition after daily practice of basic skills and vocalising. Usually, the group consists of 20-24 singers, with the balance of voice-types taken into consideration. Individuals chosen for this ensemble should have the utmost in discipline, dedication, musical abilities and a willingness to work with every member of the ensemble as well as the conductor. Performances may include the following: Holiday Concert(s), Spring Concert, Festivals, Graduation, assemblies, and various community performances. Prerequisite: Current membership, in good standing, in Norseman Honor Choir.
