School Health Services

  • Students must be healthy to be educated and educated to be healthy.

The SMMUSD Health Team is composed of Registered Credentialed School Nurses (RCSNs), a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN), and Health Office Specialists (HOS). Together, we provide equitable, student-centered care across all school sites, ensuring that each child’s health supports their success in school.

    School Nurses (RCSNs)

Every school site is supported by a Registered Credentialed School Nurse—a licensed Registered Nurse with specialized training and a School Nurse Services Credential. Some RCSNs serve more than one site and are vital members of the educational team, using evidence-based practices to support student well-being.

    School Nurses are responsible for:

    • Developing and implementing individualized care plans

    • Managing medications and medical procedures during the school day

    • Ensuring compliance with immunization requirements

    • Preventing illness and promoting wellness

    • Leading emergency preparedness and response

    • Supporting students with chronic physical and mental health conditions

    • Conducting state-mandated hearing and vision screenings

    • Promoting regular attendance through health-related interventions

    • Training staff in health-related procedures and protocols

    • Teaching health promotion, literacy, and disease prevention

    • Providing health education to students, families, and staff

    • Connecting families with community health resources

    • Encouraging age-appropriate independence and self-advocacy in students with medical needs

    • Collaborating with educators and specialists during SSTs, IEPs, 504 meetings, and other student support services

    • Working closely with the LA County Department of Public Health to prevent and manage communicable diseases in the school setting
